Adding a bit of magic with Roamer

I enjoy working on the IT Unit 2D Controlling a Floor Turtle almost much as the children do.

Right from the introduction, where we use cut out children's footprints, Roamer footprints and blindfolds through to the art and Drama that can evolve.

I have also found roamer useful working with Year 6. One year six girl couldn’t grasp the angle work they were doing in the classroom. I took her out to do some group work with Roamer to reinforce 90º angles. After just a few sessions she had even worked out how to plot an Equilateral Triangle.

Pirate Roamer

Working with a KS1 teacher I set up a Pirate Roamer Unit, which gets better every year. The children plan where they are going to hide the treasure with mini maps and mini roamers. Then they record their route on a planning sheet.

When they are confident they have completed the task, they program the Roamer on the floor map. They make pirate maps on Dazzle and dress up as pirates and film themselves with the Digital movie Makers.

You can find worksheets relating to all the above activities here.
